Murter, Croatia – visitor information

Murter developed in the vicinity of an ancient settlement Colentum. For the first the settlement was mentioned in the 11th century under another name, Veliko Selo. Residents of the island were then, in most cases, living from fishing and agriculture. Poor living conditions are expressed in their architecture. Small scarce fishing houses are strung one after the other leaving valuable trace of a unique traditional architecture. Today, the old part of the settlement is a rare and unique locality that clearly shows the former conditions in which the local residents lived. Over time Murter extended to the sea and a marvelous symbiosis of old and new was created. The town is protected by hills Raduč, Gradina and Vršine, where the church of St. Rocco is located from which extends a magnificent view of the Kornati Islands. Due to the specific geographic position and because it is sheltered from the winds there is a marina in the settlement, which every year attracts a large number of tourists. In line with demand, Murter is now a popular tourist destination with a range of hotels, apartments and gastronomy, whose natural beauty will leave you breathless.
